What We Do

The Value of Independent College Counseling

What is the value of an independent college counselor for your family?

An independent college counselor works one-on-one with each student, helping to identify colleges and universities that offer the best matches for the student's unique needs, and keeping the student on track through every phase of the college application process.

We can help your family with:

  • High School curriculum planning.

We can help students make smart choices about their high school courses so that they stay on track for college admissions.

  • College admissions profile assessment.

Although we can't guarantee admission to any individual college, a consultant can help your child identify their strengths as an applicant.

  • College selection.

We can assist your child in finding the colleges and universities which best match their interests, personality, needs, and admissions profile.

  • College entrance exams.

We can answer questions about which college entrance exams are most appropriate for your child and when to schedule testing.

  • College applications and essays.

We work with each student to establish a realistic schedule for staying on top of application details and deadlines. We will also review application elements, including essays.

  • Majors and Careers.

Students often benefit from guidance in choosing majors and careers that are a good fit, as well as information about which colleges offer strong programs in areas of interest.

  • Financial Aid.

Many families worry about how to pay for college expenses. We can help your family navigate these concerns while pointing your family in the direction of financial aid and merit scholarship opportunities.

  • Non-biased third party.

Though we love to collaborate with community schools to identify families that can benefit from our services, we have no affiliation with any particular school district, college, or university system. Our independence allows use to focus on helping your child explore a full range of college options.

  • BLMHTX
    BLMHTX

In the wake of recent violence and brutality against black lives that continues to sweep the nation, BLMHTX formed as a locally-based, and Houston-founded, activist organization and collective of researchers, activists, artists, religious leaders, and community organizers that aims to educate, empower, and build coalition in order to address issues that impact black lives in the city of Houston.

Our mission is to spark critical visions of a world where black lives matter while working toward making this a concrete reality here in Houston. In all of our work, we emphasize three core tenets: creative imagination, critical dialogue, and coalition building--all in the pursuit of intersectional social justice.

BLMHTX employs an Ella Baker model of community organizing, a model which brings people together for sustained and coordinated strategic action for social justice. As such, in addition to direct actions and political engagement with local civic leaders, we are committed to building community through programming, trainings, community meetings, and conferences that combine critical dialogue and the arts in ways that creatively highlight and confront issues of racism and social injustice. These community building efforts are central to our aim of curating spaces for disparate members of the Houston community to collaborate, come together, and think about how to contribute to the valuing of black lives through their own areas of interest and influence.
